Asbestos In Metal Works

Currently, a startling number of steelworkers are suffering from life-threatening illnesses that are a direct result of exposure to asbestos, a mineral that has been used heavily in aluminum plants, metal refining operations, steel mills, and foundries.  Unfortunately, asbestos-related diseases are not always recognized by employers.  This is why the Mesothelioma Cancer Center offers assistance, free of charge, to individuals who were exposed to asbestos during or as a result of their careers in the steelworking industry.  For more information visit http://www.asbestos.com/

A first hand Safety Report
by EGL Coordinator
Dave Lyness

WARNING
Through thorough investigation it has been determined that the gloves I had chosen to protect myself had been altered.   The Kevlar lining had been removed from the fingers and thumb area of the gloves.

This alteration left my hands unprotected and vulnerable to serious injury!

I was unaware these gloves had been altered when I used them to pull a section of side trimmer scrap through a series of rolls which became entangled and caused my gloved hand to slide down the piece of scrap resulting in a slice through the altered glove and a severe laceration to my thumb!

Please, for your own safety, Never Alter PPE!
If you find any kind of PPE that has been altered or is damaged, DO NOT USE IT
Discard it immediately so this, or something worse doesn't happen to you!

WORK SAFELY!
